St Wilfrid’s RC College, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, is incredibly proud to announce that Luke Hedley, a Year 9 pupil, has been recognised at the prestigious British Citizen Youth Awards (BCyA), held at the Palace of Westminster on Thursday 30th October 2025

Now in its ninth year, the BCyA celebrates inspirational young people across the UK who have made a positive impact in their communities. Luke was one of just 22 young recipients to receive the BCyA Medal of Honour, a national recognition for his exceptional dedication to helping others.

Luke’s remarkable journey began in January 2025, when he used his Christmas and pocket money to buy a 3D printer. Inspired by his father, a volunteer ranger, he began designing and producing 3D-printed safety whistles to support the #BeAdventureSmart campaign and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team. Over six months, Luke produced 740 whistles, raising £1,650 to promote outdoor safety initiatives.

His whistles are now used by organisations such as British Dragonflies.org and local wellbeing groups. Luke also donated 45 whistles directly to Northumberland Mountain Rescue Team and has completed two annual half-marathons to raise funds for Langdale & Ambleside MRT, in memory of a neighbour’s son.

What began as a small personal project has grown into a widely recognised campaign that continues to inspire others. Luke’s commitment, creativity, and compassion are a shining example of youth leadership in action.

TV presenter Tim Vincent, who hosted the event, praised the young awardees, saying, “The BCyA Honours celebrate compassion, selflessness, grit and determination in the young people who are so deserving of their medal.”

The British Citizen Youth Awards, in partnership with Specsavers, recognise young people aged 18 or under who are committed to helping others. Nominations for the 2026 awards are now open at www.britishcitizenyouthawards.co.uk.

Headteacher at St Wilfrid’s RC College, Catherine Lennox, said, @We are incredibly proud of Luke and all that he has achieved. His initiative, compassion, and dedication to helping others are truly inspiring. Luke embodies the values we strive to instil in our pupils: resilience, responsibility and respect. Receiving the British Citizen Youth Award is a remarkable honour, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see his efforts recognised on a national stage.”
