Year 6 pupils from a primary school in Sunderland have been taking part in several fundraising activities this Christmas as part of their Faith in Action award.

The children at St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, decided they wanted to have an impact locally, nationally and internationally and picked the following charities to support: Feeding Families, The Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal, and Teams4U Shoebox Appeal.

The children have been working in groups of 10 to coordinate the project and have collected food for Feeding Families, gifts for the Salvation Army, and items for the shoeboxes. They are also using some of their tuck shop profits to help with their charitable endeavours.

Executive headteacher Jane Ward said: “Our Year 6 children have really impressed us with their passion and enthusiasm for supporting their chosen causes, not just through the amazing amounts that they have raised but also by the time they have taken to really understand the values behind each of their chosen charities and appreciate the positive differences that they make to individual lives, understanding why the work is so important.

“We are so proud of each and every one of our amazing children.”

A spokesperson for Feeding Families said: “Your enthusiasm and dedication to supporting your communities is truly inspiring. Your kindness is helping ensure families in need receive the essentials and a little festive magic this Christmas.”

The Faith in Action Award is a national Catholic award that recognises and celebrates young people aged 10 to 18 who live out their faith through service and reflection.
